Consumers warned about hidden ‘tap and go’ surcharges | Sky News Australia

Newscorp personal finance writer Sophie Elsworth says many Australians are unaware that some retailers charge consumers a surcharge when they ‘tap and go.

’ Businesses can charge consumers the cost it takes to process the payment, although they are by law meant to pass on this information to customers. Ms Elsworth says Visa and Mastercard usually charge more for tap-and-go services than the traditional debit purchase. She told Sky News consumers should either have cash on hand for small purchases or ask the proprietor if they will be charged a fee for using the service.
