Opening statements are expected to begin Wednesday in the trial of Ali Abulaban who allegedly murdered his wife, Ana Abulaban and Rayburn Cardenas Barron in 2021.accused of fatally shooting his wife and another man inside a Downtown San Diego highrise apartment in 2021 is expected to begin Wednesday.
Abulaban was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, allegations of using a handgun in the slayings, and a special-circumstance allegation of committing multiple murders, meaning he could face the death penalty if convicted and prosecutors choose to pursue capital punishment. The trial begins more than two years after Abulaban allegedly entered the East Village apartment and shot both victims to death on a couch in the living room of the Abulabans' 35th-floor unit.
According to Deputy District Attorney Taren Brast, Ana Abulaban was attempting to leave the marriage, in part due to a prior domestic violence incident in which her husband pushed her. When he later heard his wife and another man in the apartment over the app, the prosecutor said he drove to the complex from a Mission Bay hotel where he was staying and shot both victims.During a 2022 hearing, prosecutors alleged Abulaban believed his wife was cheating on him with Barron, though District Attorney Taren Brast said Ana Abulaban had moved on from their marriage long before the shooting.
