The principle will be replaced by a clause saying a child may be detained 'where necessary, including to ensure community safety', the Labor caucus decided last night.

After a Labor caucus meeting last night, the government decided it would replace its "detention as a last result" principle with a new clause that states a child should be detained "where necessary, including to ensure community safety".

In a statement, Premier Steven Miles said the change is to make clear to the public that community safety is the most important role of the courts.
