Bonner has a previous conviction for possession of a knife. When he was only 17 he was locked up for three years for slashing a 14-year-old boy with a piece of glass.

"On the night of this latest offence he was out with friends. There was a knife in the car and he put it in his rucksack. He was searched and it was discovered there."
