WASHINGTON ― The House passed legislation Thursday to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, despite the vast majority of Republicans opposing it amid pressure from the National Rifle Association.
Most of the GOP caucus opposed the bill because of the gun measures, said Rep. Pete King , one of 33 Republicans who voted for it. Rep. Glenn Thompson said Thursday that he had concerns about the gun provisions in the VAWA bill but said they were “secondary” to other things he didn’t like. ″I was disappointed that the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization was made partisan with the inclusion of language that would strip individuals’ right to due process with respect to their 2nd Amendment rights,” he said in a statement.
“Can we stop playing political games at the expense of vulnerable women?” she said in remarks on the House floor, to cheers from Republicans and groans from Democrats. “The Democratic bill on the floor today will collect dust in the Senate.” She called out the NRA for trying to defeat the VAWA over its gun safety provisions, which she said shouldn’t even be hard to support since they respond to pretty stark statistics: One in seven women has been stalked by an intimate partner to the point where they felt afraid or believed they would be harmed. And the presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%.
Ironic! The guy standing behind Kevin McCarthy is Steve Scalise. Not long ago he took several bullets during a softball game rendering him handicapped for life, But he still not only opposes VAWA, but any limits on guns at all. You don't reflect much on life, do you Steve?
yepper and women vote for these jerks
redundant
Repugnicans
What I dont get is how they spin that for election purposes... this isnt even one of those things they can claim was okay.
And 53% of w/ women voted for a sexual predator ,a pussy grabber. W/ women will still vote for those 157 republicans who opposed renewing Violence Against Women. They are Flores and MeToo , and believe me they will go on TV as victims.
Water is wet and the sky is blue. Tell me something that'll actually make my eyes pop out in surprise.
Shame on them
The act is not something the federal government is authorized to regulate under the Constitution. It is up to the states.
because republicans hate women
Good. It’s a stupid act that does absolutely nothing to protect women.
