SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The jury has been selected for the trial of Hermanio Joseph, the man accused of causing a Northwestern schools' bus to crash, leading to the death of an 11-year-old boy.
On Monday, April 29, 2024, jury selection began for 36-year-old Hermanio Joseph, who prosecutors say was driving a Honda Odyssey in August of 2023 when he collided with a North Western school bus on SR-41. The crash caused 11-year-old Aiden Clark to be ejected from the bus. He was pronounced dead at the scene.State prosecutors have since indicted Joseph on multiple charges including involuntary manslaughter and vehicular homicide.A judge set his bail at $100,000.
Joseph's attorneys have filed multiple motions on his behalf, including motions to change the location of the trial and dismiss the case.Investigators say Joseph drove left of center, crashing into a bus full of children. At the center of the motion, is whether Joseph should be charged with a felony or misdemeanor.
Prosecutors say Joseph was driving illegally because his license was from Mexico, where he lived before moving to Ohio, but Joseph's lawyers say the state has not presented any evidence showing that his license was invalid at the time of the crash.Opening statements are scheduled for Tuesday, April 30 at 9 a.m.
