Nicholas Matthew, 27, is charged with first-degree attempted murder.

Matthew was involuntarily committed for three days when he was in California, according to officials.told officers that before being attacked, Matthew came “uncomfortably close” to her while walking along the trail. She stopped and offered to let him pass, but he laughed and declined her offer. The woman felt him strike her back shortly after declining then he began to stab her repeatedly, court documents say.

Three nearby witnesses heard the stabbing victim screaming and ran to help. Court documents say the witnesses were walking on the light blue trail approximately 100 yards east of where the stabbing victim was found.
