The move follows discussions between officials in the Taoiseach's office and legal teams representing families of the 48 victims.

Speaking at Government Buildings this morning, the Taoiseach said he will write to families in the coming days to express his remorse for what happened. It is appropriate that there will be a redress scheme for the families of Stardust victims, along with a commemoration for victims, Minister for Finance Michael McGrath has said.

He said the Government will prioritise efforts to ensure the coroner's recommendations, a commemoration and a redress scheme are implemented. "I genuinely believe that I consistently followed up any issue that the committee asked me to do. I raised various matters in the Dáil, I wrote to the relevant Ministers as requested. He added:"I also admit that my relations with the committee were at times fraught and I do regret that.
