The Supreme Court hears arguments in Idaho vs U.S. relating to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. Justices will decide whether a federal law requiring hospitals care for life-threatening cases means ER doctors in states with abortion bans must terminate pregnancies in certain circumstances.

Noticeably fewer protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday morning than convened about a month ago for the first abortion case of the term, which revolved around access to a key abortion medication, mifepristone. “I think people are exhausted, which is what the other side wants,” said Laurie Woodward Garcia, a 56-year-old grass-roots organizer who supports abortion rights and traveled from Tampa for the arguments.

“People don’t understand the repercussions of this case,” she said. “There are people … who will go to the emergency room and be turned away.” Antiabortion activists carried signs outside the court that read, “Emergency rooms are not abortion clinics.” Danielle Versluys, chief operating officer of Stanton Healthcare, an antiabortion organization, insisted that abortions are not medically necessary for people with pregnancy complications, a stance widely disputed by leading medical organizations.
