Karen Vamplew is on trial for the murder of her disabled mother-in-law

The niece of a 77-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her daughter-in-law in a fire said she found it “suspicious” the accused was dressed in clean pyjamas when she claimed she had been trying to save the victim from the blaze.

Giving evidence, Mrs Ennells said she saw Vamplew at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham following the blaze at Eton Court, Newark. She said: “I remember thinking her pyjamas were clean, I remember Karen said she could hear my aunt shouting but could not get to her.” Mr Vout said: “On December 16, 2021, the day after the fire, you gave a statement to the police and by that time Karen had been arrested on suspicion of murder. In your statement, you said ‘I am devastated by what’s happened, I had a good relationship with auntie Anne, I just need to find out what happened because a lot of things just don’t make sense’.
