'Our government is wildly off track': Atlassian billionaires take aim at new social media laws

"In its blind rush to legislate, the government is creating confusion and threatening jobs," Mr Farquhar said on Twitter. Mr Cannon-Brookes said there had already been discussions inside Atlassian about whether its employees could be ensnared by the laws.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said the government's policy "doesn't stifle innovation - it's just applying decent community standards, through the law, that apply in the physical world". Mr Porter said the Christchurch attack had exposed an urgent need to introduce up-to-date laws around violent online material.

"Mainstream media cannot live broadcast the horror of Christchurch or other violent crimes and neither should social media be able to do so," the minister said, dismissing claims that the legislation undermined the tech sector in Australia.
