New U.S. citizens, from left, Supinya Phapant of Thailand, Julio Martinez of El Salvador and Mary McCarthy of Canada recite the Pledge of Allegiance during a naturalization ceremony at the George W. Bush Presidential Center last month in Dallas. By Martha C. Nussbaum April 2 at 1:39 PM Martha C. Nussbaum is Ernst Freund distinguished service professor of law and ethics at the University of Chicago. Her most recent book is “The Monarchy of Fear: A Philosopher Looks at Our Political Crisis.
At 1 p.m., we were led upstairs to the ceremony room — first, the new almost-citizens with their paperwork , then the well-wishers. Many of the new citizens were single or otherwise without supporters. I talked to a woman who volunteers helping immigrants prepare for the test: She was there to support one of her students, a single young man.
In an especially moving moment, the emcee invited children in the audience who knew the Pledge of Allegiance to come to the front and lead the recitation by the new citizens. The kids, so proud, flocked forward. Finally, another video: Lee Greenwood singing “God Bless the USA” with heartwarming photos of immigrants and soldiers. I couldn’t help crying at the idea of starting over with nothing in a free land. It isn’t a perfect land, but it is pretty great.
We hear of a fractured America, of a need for healing. In Denver, I saw, with renewed hope, the America we aspire to be — a welcoming America, with open arms for all who are willing to learn, work and serve. I’m sure if I went to a similar ceremony in Chicago I would see the same thing. Our polarization is bad. There is surely too much fear and mistrust of immigrants.
The hole world is losing faith in the US
I lose faith in the media every time I read a article.
I lost my faith
They are immigrants who are happy to become citizens.
The only thing people these days are losing faith in is our media outlets like the Washington Post the New York times MSNBC CNN etc.
That might make things worse though if you’re one of the many people who’s “loss of faith” in the United States stems from the demographic changes resulting from immigration. All that melanin might trigger a fatal allergic reaction among elderly Fox-news viewers in the audience
I'm not, No. Never.
All we have to do is get rid of Trump. No more brat crying
And you guys want people to come here illegally and get in front of the line?
My wife was sworn in as an American citizen on July 4th by the President of the United States at Monticello as part of the US Bicentennial celebration. Tremendously stirring.
I'm losing the faith in Manchester United though. 😑
rarely do i retweet
I had the privilege of attending many such ceremonies while an AUSA in Brooklyn. They never ceased to be uplifting and joyous. The judges were always so warm. People dressed up, families took pictures. Everyone should see it.
Legal immigrants embracing The Constitution while insane DemocRATS attempt to rip it to shreds. I'll bet these people aren't out burning flags, either.
Citizens,,,,,they still have those,,,,
True American citizenships
Democrats never had faith in America. They started a war once when they tried to leave the Union.
The best part of my brother’s Air Force boot camp graduation was the citizenship ceremony they had at the start.
I hope to attend one soon
Donald Trump needs to attend & take the test those 'trying for citizenship' have to take
I have faith in America. I have ZERO faith in Democrat-Socialists or in the opinions and 'news' from fakeNews propaganda outfits like the Washington Post
Nobody is losing their faith for the country! But, if you want to talk about Coward Cadet Bone Spurs Trump, that's another thing!
I support legal immigration, asylum seekers, and refugees.
Lol. All lies... 👀 🇨🇦
