Azali was declared the winner with 59 percent of the votes, well ahead of his rivals Mahamoudou Ahamada who scored 15,7 percent and Mouigni Baraka Said Soilihi, who was a distant third with 5,5 percent of the ballots cast.
Violence broke out last week after defeated one of the presidential candidates Soilihi Mohamed, who came fourth in the vote, was arrested. Azali’s campaign director Houmed Msaidie said his camp was available to dialogue with the opposition “if the opposition asks for it”.
