Shania Begum failed to attend court after being called to serve as a juror

Shania Begum was called up to serve as a juror at Liverpool Crown Court, but did not appear on the date required. She has now been handed a huge fine and risks being put behind bars herself if she does not pay up within a month.

When called by court staff, she answered but then put the phone down upon learning the nature of the contact. The worker phoned back later the same day and then the following day, but received no answer on both occasions and instead left voicemail messages. However, she again failed to appear. The Honorary Recorder of Liverpool Judge Andrew Menary KC said today: "I am satisfied that she has deliberately refused to attend.

"The vast majority of people do that. They give their service realising that it is important, necessary and vital for the operation of the courts in our country.
