The highest levels of law enforcement said this week there are new worries about how America's enemies could look to do damage.

FBI Director Christopher Wray, center, testifies during a House Select Committee focusing on China on Capitol Hill, Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2024, in Washington. Could terrorists attack the United States in the near future? The highest levels of law enforcement said this week there are new worries about how America's enemies could look to do damage.

What does a potential attack look like? Experts said it likely wouldn’t be on the scale of 9/11 but could come from a homegrown threat inspired by attacks abroad. “Since 9/11 the threats have been more mundane and limited. Usually someone untrained picking up a gun and shooting people. There haven’t been that many bombings compared to the ‘70s and ‘80s. The threats tend to be low level and local and that’s the primary focus of government agencies," Daniel Byman, senior fellow for the Center for Strategic & International Studies, said. While there are no specific threats to the U.S.
