That’s the disconnect Greenspon may have begun to exploit — that this bright woman, with an imposing presence became the frightened presence she says she was

OTTAWA — Caitlan Coleman’s cross-examination had barely begun — defence lawyer Lawrence Greenspon was about 45 minutes in and the proverbial gloves not only weren’t off but also were still in his briefcase, if not back in his office — when she smartly rebuked him.

On the website, a 16-year-old Coleman variously described herself as “a person who was violent” and either “easygoing or a terrifying spectre of volcanic rage,” and listed her negative characteristics as “vengeful, very overbearing and violent, unfortunately yes.” For instance, with an online boyfriend named C., whom she’d never met in person, she found out he’d “cheated” on her and that discovery triggered an outburst of rage and sadness. On an online journaling site, where she kept a journal for several years, she described herself as “dangerously, maniacally insane.” She may have enjoyed as a teenager having people be a little afraid of her, she said.

He was arrested Dec. 31, 2017 and is on trial now for 19 charges, among them multiple counts of assault and sexual assault, forcible confinement, threatening and criminal harassment.Coleman, while maintaining she wasn’t physically violent, nonetheless agreed that she sometimes threw things at him and that she had once, in 2007, “shoved” Boyle while they were standing on a Toronto subway platform.

Once, on their Central America trip, she’d had “a particularly upsetting argument with Josh” and took too many sleeping or anti-anxiety pills, worrying him to the point he forced her to vomit because he “thought I might die.” Last week in her examination-in-chief, she testified that the emotional and verbal abuse that she said was routine in their relationship turned into physical violence in captivity, where, she said, he frequently hit her or bit her.
