The new probe comes after James Daly, deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, made Greater Manchester Police aware of neighbours who contradicted Ms Rayner’s statement that a property, separate from her husband’s, was her main residency. The Bury North MP alleged she may have made a false declaration about where she was living on the electoral register.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said on Friday: “We’re investigating whether any offences have been committed. This follows a reassessment of the information provided to us by Mr Daly.” Ms Rayner has come under intense scrutiny in recent months amid claims she failed to pay capital gains tax when she sold her home, a former council property bought underprogramme last month, Ms Rayner said: “I am confident that I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong. I’ve been very clear on my advice that I have received.”
