Roxanne Tickle, a transgender woman, is suing a women's-only social media app for allegedly discriminating against her on the basis of her gender identity.The CEO of a women's-only app ran a "ceaseless" online campaign against a transgender woman, who is now seeking $200,000 in damages, the Federal Court has heard.
The court heard Ms Tickle was removed from the app in September 2021, as creators sought to remove any men who had managed to create an account. Ms Tickle's barrister, Georgina Costello KC, suggested the emails would have been answered if the sender was "a woman from birth"."Because she has had gender affirmation surgery… she presents to the world as a woman, she is recognised as a woman at her workplace, socially in her sports.
The court also heard offensive merchandise was sold, by a third party, to raise funds for Ms Grover's legal fees."This case is the 'what is a woman?' case, and one must be able to speak about it fearlessly and frankly," Ms Nolan said.
