New Zealand's government on Monday introduced a bill it plans to rush into law that would ban the types of weapons a gunman used to kill 50 people at two mosques.

Police Minister Stuart Nash said that if lawmakers pass the bill as expected, the new law will take effect April 12, less than a month after the March 15 attacks. Plans for law changes were first announced by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in the days after the attacks, when the government imposed an immediate ban on the sales of such weapons."These are guns that are designed to kill people," Nash said.

The bill wouldn't ban guns often used by farmers and hunters, including semi-automatic .22-calibre or smaller guns that hold up to 10 rounds, or shotguns that hold up to five rounds. The bill would also impose tougher penalties for people who use the weapons after they are banned. Lawmakers intend to introduce more legislation later in the year, including the creation of a register to track guns.

Try banning kitchen knives instead. bankitchenknives

I bet there is a line up of criminals just waiting to hand in their guns

And nothing from CTV....

Did you report on the thousands of Christian killed by muslims in Nigeria this year...guess not!

I don’t know looking at the actual data for gun crime in New Zealand asks the question what’s it prove?

Using raw emotions due to a tragedy to push through policy is NOT leadership. It's exploitation.

An opportunistic power grab by government and nothing more. This is feel good state-sponsored property theft to placate the naive.

Legislating based on your feelings. That’ll stop those pesky criminals!
