Alexander Charles Howe was arrested after police responded to a stabbing at the property on Twin Oaks Road in Spryfield on Aug. 16, 2023, at about 2:20 a.m.The victim, Adam Dempsey, 32, was found wounded on the front lawn and died in hospital. Howe, 37, was supposed to have a preliminary inquiry in Halifax provincial court this June, but the Crown exercised its right to use a direct indictment to bypass that hearing and send the matter straight to trial in Supreme Court.

Dates for Howe’s jury trial were set last Thursday, when he appeared in Supreme Court in Halifax via a video link from jail.Howe has not applied for bail. He has been ordered to have no contact with three potential Crown witnesses. Defence lawyer Sarah White is representing Howe, while Sean McCarroll and Mike Berrigan are the prosecutors.
