JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress Youth League president Collen Malatji said while seeing former speaker of the National Assembly Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula in the dock is sad, it’s a clear indication of the party’s commitment that no one is above the law.
Malatji said it’s unfortunate seeing someone who’s served the African National Congress for more than 40 years facing serious allegations. She’s facing multiple allegations of bribery stemming from her time as the country’s defence minister., maintaining that this was not because she was guilty, but to afford herself time to fight the allegations.
Malatji said this week has shown that the country’s institutions can take on anyone, no matter their position in society. “She needs to prove her innocence, if she is innocent but she has followed proper processes of the ANC, she has resigned as a speaker to give space and integrity to an important arm of the state and she’s on step aside, until that time, I think let's allow the law and protect our constitutional democracy.”
