Former US president Donald Trump will be finding out today when his first criminal case will go ahead, as he attends a pre-trial hearing in New York. He's also up against a deadline to pay a fine of $464m for a separate fraud case.

Donald Trump's trial date in the hush money case had initially been set for today, but it was pushed back after 100,000 new documents were turned over by the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York. The documents related to the 2018 federal investigation into Mr Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, who is expected to testify. Mr Trump's team says it needs at least 90 days to go through the new documents, and that they could damage the credibility of Mr Cohen as a witness.

Some 30,000 pages relate to documents seized from five iPhones and email accounts associated with Mr Cohen.Mr Trump's lawyers and the prosecution blame each other for the fact the US attorney's office didn't turn over the documents until this month. The defence alleged the district attorney had been trying to hide exculpatory evidence ahead of the trial, and only turned it over following a January subpoena.
