A black lawyer has filed a complaint against a Maryland sheriff's deputy who detained him after mistaking him for a suspect.

A black lawyer has filed a complaint against a Maryland sheriff's deputy who detained him after mistaking him for a suspect.

After a successful hearing, James says the officer didn't believe his driver's license was valid. He says he was the only black attorney in the courtroom and it was his first time representing a client in Harford County.

Let’s see the client he was representing as well as all his fellow attorneys at the Free Legal Clinic where he works. It was his first court appearance, guess he should have checked in with the city prosecuting attorney which is standard practice.

Like he's so perfect that he expects everyone else to be perfect too. What if the deputy actually stopped a criminal because he's doing his job? Just because you're a high-faulutent lawyer and black don't mean you're exempt.

Why was he pulled over to begin with? Forget his racial yelling and discuss why the police had to have an interaction with him. Basketball players, Football players, singers, actors all cannot seemed to obey the laws regardless of their occupations! Facts please !

Why not just 'a lawyer'

If he resembled the suspect, the deputy had probable cause to stop him. The rule of thumb for B/M's to to cooperate with LE and limit the time and exposure that they have with them. Resisting or being uncooperative increases their time dealing with LE, & the chance it will go bad

So attorney's aren't usually 'black' This is racist AF

Key word “mistaken”.

Do you have a pic of the suspect? Maybe they really do look alike. Whats the big deal. Pretty sure many white people look alike too.

Where is a picture of his client? Maybe they do look alike? Oh sorry, right I forgot...its because I'm BLACK!!! When do you hear whites whine about mistaken for another white? That's right you don't, because they don't thrive on VICTIMHOOD!

At least he was not shot !

JamesNMildredH1 Good for him; and also finally.

FEEZYDoesIT Stop being mealy-mouthed. The deputy did not 'mistake him' for a criminal, he assumed that, as a Black man in a courthouse, he must be one.

These are not new occurrences. Black people have ALWAYS talked about being profiled, and harassed for simply breathing. Technology verifies what we’ve been going through our entire lives. It’s time they fixed their fragility, and whatever else drives them to hate for no reason.

the civil war abolished slavery, & yet still into today's climate nothing really has changed in some areas of America

Not much sympathy for this guy here. He was neat and well dressed, he had ID. No reason to question him or detain him. Imagine how much harder his life is than yours. He goes about his business only to have time and dignity stolen from him.

Small town police tackled me in the street once in a black neighborhood. They said I fit the reported description of house burglar. Seriously, how many middle aged overweight white accountant house burglars do they investigate? Still racist, I know.

This happened to my dad once he then moved on with his life

Just because he looks like a goon.. Com'on man

Felt sorry for him, then realized he is a lawyer... yuck,

He will lose.

I would hope that law-enforcement would detain anyone they suspected of being a criminal posing as a lawyer, regardless of race!

Poor thing

Get over it

Don't you mean an attorney? Seriously who cares black or not. That's racist

treat it as a learning Curve what did you learn commrade
