Mr Baitson is survived by his children, Zoe and Myles, his mother Helen and his brother Richard. He was predeceased by his father Paul.

Arian Hanitzsch, an 18-year-old German exchange student, was one of the first on the scene when Mr Baitson was attacked. The Coláiste Eamon Rís student, who is a trained first-aider, used the skills he learned in his native country and with the Cobh Red Cross to assist Ian. "My thoughts and my prayers are with Ian and his family because what they're going through is so much worse than what I was going through. And that's why it is so important that everyone thinks of them and my thoughts and prayers are with them."“I didn’t see what happened but there was another guy who saw it, I was standing next to the entrance and he ran in screaming ‘there’s a man down’ and then I ran out to help him," he said.
