A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denies the murder of Paul Marsh

A teenager accused of murder has told a jury that he picked up a knife because he was ‘scared’ the victim was going to hurt him.

Giving evidence, he told jurors that he had gone to the flat, owned by a friend and former neighbour of Mr Marsh on two previous occasions in November last year to sell him drugs. Speaking of the incident on November 17, he said he went back to the flat on Samuel Street to sell drugs, crack cocaine and heroin, to the flat owner. There was a social gathering with many people including the flat owner, Mr Marsh, during which they were taking drugs and drinking alcohol.

He claimed that Mr Marsh left the room briefly before coming back and asking his friend for a ‘tick’, which he described as to ‘lend someone drugs’.
