A senior leader of the international MS-13 gang was arrested on terrorism charges earlier this month, according to court documents.
Jandres-Parada was a member of the Ranfla Nacional, which is the highest leadership level in MS-13, and provided guidance for the gang, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The board purportedly sought to expand and protect MS-13's power, territory and reputation in the U.S., El Salvador and Mexico through violence and intimidation.
Board members allegedly strived to retaliate against the U.S. for its perceived unfavorable treatment of the gang. The Ranfla Nacional directed an increase in violence in the U.S. in 2015 on allegations the government dismantled a relationship between MS-13 and El Salvador that provided support to the gang, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The gang would also promote online to publicize its violent capabilities and hinder police’s ability to prosecute it, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The Ranfla Nacional allegedly once ordered the murder of an FBI agent assigned to El Salvador.
