A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denies the murder of Paul Marsh

A teenager fatally stabbed a dad in a flat in Wigan after a ‘confrontation’ at a social gathering, a trial has heard.

Jurors heard that during the ‘confrontation’ Mr Marsh was stabbed to his shoulder. The wound severed a majority artery, and despite the best efforts of paramedics, he sadly died. “This was not a particularly wholesome social gathering. Almost everybody, if not everybody, was taking drugs of some sort. People were smoking cannabis, and there was evidence of people smoking crack cocaine, a form of cocaine,” Mr Hayton said.

After the alleged stabbing, the teenager fled from the scene, jurors heard. He was later arrested and interviewed, telling officers that during the confrontation, Mr Marsh produced the knife and during the struggle, fatally stabbed himself. Jurors were shown a photo of the defendant taken two days before, which showed him wearing a balaclava and holding a ‘substantial knife’. This knife was not used to kill Mr Marsh, but showed that he was prepared to arm himself, the prosecutor alleged.Mr Marsh suffered a number of injuries, including to his ear, head, and knuckles, as well as a stab wound to his shoulder.
