In October, Russell made her first appearance in court. She entered a plea of not guilty in municipal court in Hoover. At that time, a municipal court judge found Russell guilty on the misdemeanor charges and said each charge carries six months of jail time and an $831 fine. The judge also recommended restitution of nearly $18,000 be paid. In an effort to avoid jail time, Russell's attorney appealed the conviction.

After calling 911, she stopped to check on the child and called a family member to report the same details. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open. Her family, members of the community, and police conducted several efforts to safely locate Russell who was last seen on I-459.On July 15, at 10:44 p.m. the 911 center in Hoover received a call from Russell's residence that she returned home on foot.

At that time, they located Carlee’s wig, cell phone and purse on the roadway near her vehicle, and Russell’s Apple Watch was in her purse.
