AFL: Former number 3 pick, Will Phillips could seek a trade away from North Melbourne in the offseason after falling down the pecking order in their midfield.

The AFL will begin conducting the next phase of testing for its new ‘smart-ball technology’, which could help solve issues with the score review system, by using microchipped Sherrins in the VFL this weekend.

The AFL’s graphics partner Intaneous and Sherrin have also been heavily involved in discussions, as they look to incorporate the statistics that come from the ball into live broadcasts, while still maintaining the traditional feel and weight of a match-day Sherrin football. Collingwood and Sandringham’s VFL sides will clash using the ball, while Collingwood’s women’s side take on the Southern Saints in the VFLW.

It is not the first time that the ball will grace the hands of professional footballers, with AFL clubs using the smart-ball in pre-season training through the form of a blind trial.“We did blind testing, so I think players took a bit of time trying to work out if they could tell the difference but they couldn’t, which was what we wanted,” AFL executive general manager of football Laura Kane said.
