Recent International Women’s Day events were sobered by the ongoing gender persecution and institutionalized oppression against women and girls in Afghanistan and Iran. A series of high-level conferences, meetings, and webinars this past week—several of which took place in Canada—raised the call to criminalize gender-based persecution and gender apartheid in international law.

And that is why many experts are calling for gender apartheid to be codified, and for a stronger international response to the women’s rights crisis in Afghanistan which would send a strong signal in defense of women’s rights globally.
