New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the law creating the state's reparations commission last year.

“From the slave patrols, to convict leasing and terrorizing of the Black communities by the War on Drugs, we are due reparations!” Daniels, whose comments were first reported by the New York Post,in February 2023. “The criminal injustice system must be abolished and restitution and compensation made to repair the cross-generational damages inflicted on its victims, Black people.”

Daniels’s commission colleague, Lurie Daniel Favors, echoed his sentiment when defending campaigns to defund police departments.New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the law creating the commission last year and appointed three of the nine commissioners to examine inequalities impacting the Black community. The other six were appointed by legislative leaders.
