A man who was arrested after three woman ran across the Dampier foreshore in WA to stop him holding his son's head in the water was hearing voices at the time, a court has heard.

He had been charged with attempted murder, but pleaded guilty to endangering the life, health or safety of his son.A 27-year-old Pilbara man charged with doing an act to endanger the life, health or safety of his son at the Dampier foreshore has been given an 18-month suspended sentence.

Defence counsel Seamus Rafferty SC said his client was deeply remorseful for his actions and the public interest was best served by him undertaking rehabilitation in the community for his drug use. The man spent 170 days in custody after his arrest in September last year before being released on bail.
