Brexit: Action urged to preserve EU citizens' rights to benefits

Theresa May has said EU citizens in the UK will be able to stay even if Britain leaves the EU without a formal withdrawal deal. They would also keep their social security rights.

However, MPs and peers on the human rights committee have raised concerns that the Immigration and Social Security Co-ordination Bill could leave people in a"rights limbo". Its chair, Labour MP Harriet Harman, said:"We're talking about the rights of people who have resided in the UK for years, decades even, paying into our social security system or even having been born in the UK and lived here their whole lives.

BBCPolitics Already been sorted.

UK citizens & taxpayers should get their snouts in the trough first

BBCPolitics Bout english rights.

BBCPolitics So neither Cameron nor May managed to change EU demands.

what are the numbers of eastern europeans living in UK, how does it relate to the numbers of UK citizens living in eastern europe? i know it's uncomfortable to ask these questions but if we'd be more dellegent in the first place we may have made a better job of it

wither you agree or disagree this is one of the problems which was created by thinking in the short term that got peoples backs up. is the benefit system in eastern europe in line with the UK? what would happen to a UK citizen living in this part of EU? does it compare favourably

We said we would on day one. More lies from the disinformation channel.

No we want to protect our rights first.

Oh dear. Poor foreigners. Snore

EU or not this government has been cutting benefits pensions & rights women born in the mid 50 = no pensions if they bought up a family when their husband dies this gov have stopped the wife claiming on their husbands pension and more the cuts keep coming !

BBCPolitics No. Why should we? It’s okay for you lot, paid by the state and with cushy pensions, but for those of us struggling to run businesses, pay staff and ourselves, the tax burden is already too much.

BBCPolitics What about the rights of 17million + who voted to leave the EU?

The EU insists this is a matter of reciprocal deals between individual member countries and the UK. When they want to talk I'm sure we'll put them at the back of line.

Reciprocation should be agreed first?

I thought all this had been sorted and was guaranteed whether deal or no deal

Fake BBC news.

BBC fake news and scaremongering as usual. You are a publicly financed company, not a tool of the elites to tell their lies.

People that have been unfortunate to lose their job and end up on universal credit and paid taxes most of their life can get SANCTIONED!! at the drop of a hat for nothing. and the BBC main concern is EU citizens have the right to their benefits go and fuck yourself BBC

BBC & Westminster - Just spout whatever shite you want to. Nobody believes you any more anyway. 'Brexiteers are calling for the execution of non-whites who haven't been in Britain since before1066! Only the EU can save us from this fictitious ghastliness!' 😂

What about the millions of UK citizens living in Europe, paying taxes in Europe? Do they have their benefits stopped too?

People that have been unfortunate to lose their job and end up on universal credit and paid taxes most of their life can get a section at the drop of a hat for nothing. and the BBC main concern is EU citizens have the right to their benefits go and fuck yourself BBC
