State Rep. Phillip Ensler says that taxpayer money used to fund private schools could hurt funding at public K-12 schools. A new law meant to help parents pay for their children’s education brings forth concerns from educators at public K-12 schools in Alabama. The CHOOSE Act gives families taxpayer money that would pay for private school tuition, homeschooling or other educational expenses.
“It is problematic when our public schools are in need of more resources that if we take funding away from them, it’s going to just make it that much harder for teachers to do their jobs, and it really then takes away from the students that are going to remain in those schools,” said state Rep. Phillip Ensler of District 74. Ensler added the law could consequently cause public schools to lose funding if parents choose to withdraw students from public school systems
