The bill aims to quash the majority of Post Office convictions in England and Wales by the end of July

Those with overturned convictions will receive an interim payment with the option of immediately taking a fixed and final offer of £600,000 Rishi Sunak said it “marks an important step forward in finally clearing” the names of hundreds of wronged branch managers who have had their lives “callously torn apart”.

Sub-postmasters who have already settled for less money will have their compensation topped up to this level, and people can instead choose to have their claims assessed as part of the usual scheme process. There is no limit to compensation. The Post Office pursued prosecutions, despite knowing that from at least 2010 onwards there were faults in the centralised accounting software.

So far, 39 criminal convictions for theft, fraud and false accounting were overturned in a landmark Court of Appeal ruling in 2021 that also paved the way for more appeals. In total, 93 people have had their convictions quashed.
