Jose Ruiz is accused of beating and killing 5-year-old Mercedes Lozoya back in February 2022. He is facing eight counts of death and serious bodily injury to a child under 14.
SAN ANTONIO - The trial begins Tuesday for a suspect who made national headlines after the brutal death of his girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter.The jury heard opening statements from the state and Ruiz's defense team. Ruiz was charged with injury to a child, assault bodily injury, and violation of protective order.The state told the jury this case was going to be a graphic one because of the alleged abuse Mercedes endured at the hands of Ruiz.
Prosecutors said Mercedes' mother Katrina will be taking the stand. She accepted a plea deal as she was previously a defendant in this case. However, several points were objected to by the state and the judge reprimanded the defense for continually bringing up matters that didn't relate to the case.
