The decision will be based on the assessment of the South African Post Office's capacity and the possibility of enforcing the restriction on courier companies.

After years of controversy, the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) will decide whether to extend or scrap the exclusive legal right of the Post Office to deliver all parcels under 1 kilogram later this month.

The DCDT will assess the capacity of the South African Post Office (SAPO) and the possibility of enforcing the lighter than 1kg restriction on courier companies in making its determination, the department told News24 in response to questions.
