Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Justice League rejected Superman’s “American Way” by recruiting a beloved hero. Superman is often associated with the Justice League, but the team was forced to do without him for a period in the 1980s. This forced the League to think outside the box and recruit heroes off the beaten path, as Martian Manhunter reveals to newcomer Animal Man in 1989’s Animal Man #9.
In the story “Home Improvements,” written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Tom Grummett and appearing in Animal Man #9, the titular hero, who joined the Justice League a few months prior, confides in the Martian Manhunter that his powers have gone haywire. He tells J’onn that he understands if he cannot continue in the League, but his fears are put to rest.
I think we need someone like you. Someone who's fighting for the life of the planet and not simply personal glory or the American Way.-Martian Manhunter Animal Man may have seemed like an odd choice for Justice League membership, but the Martian Manhunter broke down why Buddy was chosen: he is not a glory hound, nor does he limit his thinking to such an ill-defined concept as “the American Way.” A central theme of Grant Morrison’s Animal Man was animal rights and environmental justice. Under Morrison’s direction, Animal Man helped liberate captive lab subjects as well as raise awareness of vegetarianism.
