The Pretoria High Court has ordered Minister of Safety and Security Bheki Cele to pay R93.9 million, plus interest, to underwriter Lloyd’s of London over a brazen robbery carried out by a gang that included serving police officers in 2014.
Cele had argued that the two officers were acting in a"frolic" of their own, and he could not be held vicariously liable for their role in stealing the cash. This type of liability arises when a person or company is found to be legally responsible for the actions of a third party.
