26-year-old Zachery Camden and 36-year-old James Johnson are the former Williamson County deputies indicted for manslaughter in the death of Javier Ambler. of two former Williamson County deputies started on Monday. James Johnson and Zachary Camden are accused in the 2019 death of Javier Ambler.Neither the prosecution nor defense dispute that Ambler died on the side of the road in Austin while Williamson County deputies were trying to handcuff him.
Taylor told the jury during opening statements that Ambler weighed 400 pounds. She says the former college football player also suffered from congestive heart failure, hypertension, and sleep apnea. "Javier's tragic death could have been avoided if these two defendants had acted reasonably and prudently instead of playing to the Live PD cameras," said Taylor.Defense Attorney Kevin Ervin countered that Ambler never would have gotten the attention of Williamson County deputies if he had dimmed his headlights. Ervin told the Travis County jury that the situation escalated when Ambler sped off as deputies tried to make a routine traffic stop.
The two deputies tazed Ambler several times during the arrest, but the defense says his medical conditions are what killed him.
