MELFORT — Jaskirat Singh Sidhu went to jail Friday, 350 days after he poked his head through an opening in his upturned semi and got swallowed in chaos.
Sidhu’s semi, traveling 86 to 96 km/h, intersected with the Humboldt Broncos’ bus at a highway crossing on April 6, 2018, killing 16 people and injuring 13 more. His truck left no tire marks. No brake was applied. “If you think we’re being harsh, that we don’t want to forgive … just put yourself in our shoes for 30 seconds,” she said. “For one minute. And see how your reaction or your view might change. Just 30 seconds. Trade us a spot.”
“It didn’t need to happen,” he said, his eyes filling with tears. “There was no reason. No reason that it had to happen.” Mark Dahlgren, whose son Kaleb suffered a brain injury, talked about trying to find some sort of new normal, even though “we’re still in a bit of a fog.” Several families talked about sentencing as another step; not closure, necessarily, but a thing to get through, and one they’re glad is finished. Next up is the one-year anniversary, just a couple of weeks away.
The overall consequences for Sidhu are disproportionate to the crime.
