The Israel Defense Forces will arrange and assist in the evacuation of babies from Gaza City's debilitated Al-Shifa Hospital, a top spokesperson said Saturday.

The update comes as Health officials in Hamas-run Gaza said that a newborn in a unit for premature infants died due to a loss of electricity at the hospital, saying that there were 37 babies in that unit. Israeli personnel are in regular contact with the hospital staff there, according to IDF Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.

United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and leadership at the World Health Organization have in recent days called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to push for greater efforts to avoid civilian deaths, which, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry, now exceed 10,000.The assault on northern Gaza, the focus of Israel's month-old war to free hostages held by Hamas terrorists, comes after a brutal surprise attack by Hamas on Oct.
