This year’s theme is “The Year of Indigenous Languages: Promoting and Deepening a Human Rights Culture”.

In March 1960, the Sharpeville community embarked on a march to protest against pass laws.

Apartheid police shot and killed 69 protesters and the tragedy came to be known as the Sharpeville Massacre. “We have dedicated this year’s Human Rights Day celebrations to the promotion of indigenous languages as a fundamental part of building a human rights culture,” said Ramaphosa.“The Sharpeville and Langa massacres came to symbolise the moral superiority of the anti-apartheid cause. Though lacking the guns of their oppressors, they were determined to stand up for what was right, no matter the cost,” he added.
