Voters are heading to the polls Tuesday in several states with key offices and issues on the line. The 2023 contests could provide clues about what to expect in next year’s crucial elections.

All eyes are on a handful of mostly suburban races around the state that could decide which party has majorities in the Senate and House of Delegates. Republicans are protecting a narrow edge in the House and hope to flip the Senate so they can help Gov. Glenn Youngkin enact a conservative agenda. Democrats hope to defend their edge in the Senate to block that agenda, then flip the House as a power flex that would diminish Youngkin’s standing as a potential presidential hopeful.

VanValkenburg battling in a suburban Richmond district that leans slightly blue but where Youngkin has spent considerable time campaigning; Sen. T.
