The government's policies for the upcoming year are unveiled during the King's Speech, with a pledge to put criminal justice 'at the heart' of its plans.

The section on new legal frameworks to support the development of self-driving vehicles and innovation in technologies such as 'machine learning' is perhaps the most interesting. It points towards a future economy taking advantage of the benefits of AI, while regulating its risks, which the prime minister has been so keen to promote in recent months.

While there's opposition to this from the more libertarian wing of the Tory party - the likes of Liz Truss - it's a policy which has been broadly welcomed. But for the speech to link this to the government's promise to 'cut waiting lists' on the NHS is perhaps rather more optimistic.
