Deputy Garda Commissioner Anne Marie McMahon has had to defer her retirement because not a single senior garda has applied for that post.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Ms McEntee said:"This is a competition that's still open. It doesn't close until Thursday. It is an extremely important post for many reasons, as I'm sure people will appreciate, and I do hope between now and the end of the week that we will have as many applications as possible from within An Garda Síochána."
She added:"I think we have excellent people working at various different levels within An Garda Síochána who would do an absolutely superb job within the role of Deputy Commissioner. "The competition is still open, so I can't say who may or may not apply between now and then, but obviously I anticipate that we will have some fantastic candidates.""There are issues that have been raised with me and there are specific issues that I have brought to the attention of colleagues and we now have a commitment from Government to review particular measures that are potentially impacting people coming forward.
She said that there are specific issues impacting on people's tax liability,"but a commitment has been given by Minister McGrath to review this particular issue and to do so as soon as possible".No senior gardaí apply for deputy commissioner post
