The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings.CHICAGO — The Illinois Supreme Court on Tuesday let stand a prison sentence of less than seven years for a white Chicago police officer convicted of killing black teenager Laquan McDonald that many criticized as far too lenient.
McDonald was carrying a small knife in 2014 when Van Dyke exited his squad car and almost immediately opened fire. Police video released in 2015 showed Van Dyke firing 16 bullets into McDonald, many after the 17-year-old had crumpled to the ground. Asked whether Van Dyke's comparatively light sentence was an illustration of racial disparities in sentencing, Raoul paused before saying:"Suffice to say that I believe the sentence was inconsistent with the law."
Van Dyke went to trial charged with first-degree murder, which has a mandatory minimum prison term of 45 years. Jurors replaced it with second-degree murder after finding Van Dyke shot out of fear for his life, though that fear was unreasonable.

Wonder when can a regular citizen encounter a cop and claim he or she fears for their lives?
Judges , lawyers , police are all brotherhoods and they look out for there brotherhoods
Another example of white privileged , just like manafort . This officer can say he made a mistake and he is should mercy. If the roles where reversed, laquan couldn’t say he made a mistake killing that officer . He wouldn’t get no mercy, the officer family would get justice .
It's always that they feared for their lives. That's a bunch of crap. They murder, then say they fear for their luves

It ain't over yet.. APPEAL
Death penalty or 30 years in prison, minimum for this pig. From now on zero tolerance for a cop who kills unarmed man , JUSTICE .
Gun rights are out of control! It began with you could shoot & kill some1 to protect your life, but now has morphed into you can kill any1 if you're afraid that someone will punch you. Then they complain that they're losing rights when they're actually gaining more. It's a joke!
It's been too long since cops have been thought of as protectors. With the invention of portable video came the realization of what many of us already knew, that police forces have become criminal orgs. who use their resources to gain a profit & protect their own. Wake up America
