We have a 6-month-old baby and also a 1½-year-old dog. Because of this, I tend to wake up the baby at 8:30-9:00 so that I can deal with the dog before the baby gets up for the day . I get that this is a bit late for a lot of parents, but it works for us.
A few weeks ago, my mother-in-law came for a visit. On two occasions, she woke the baby up much earlier. The first time, she woke me up first, at around 6:30, because she said the baby was fussing. I was half asleep and when she offered to give him a bottle I said yes, but asked her to put him back to sleep afterwards. She didn’t even try to; instead I found her afterwards playing with him in the dining room, so I immediately took him back to his nursery and then to bed.
I’d like to think she misunderstood me , but a large part of me suspects that she just wanted to hang out with her grandson, especially given that she is unable to sleep past 5 a.m. and was probably bored. While I do understand her impulse, after she left it took a long time to get him back on his schedule, leading to many too-early wakings both for him and my spouse, since they often occurred when I was walking the dog. I am admittedly rather annoyed by the whole thing and am ready to lay down the law: that she is not to get the baby out of bed, ever. But then part of me wonders … is 9:00 too late for a 6-month-old to get up? Our schedule seems to be working.
There is no need for your child to become an early riser at 6 months old. When there’s a reason for him to get up earlier, like daycare or school, you’ll make sure that happens . You’re within your rights to ask your mother-in-law and any other visitors to let your child sleep if he’s sleeping and respect your existing household routine. But I don’t know that there’s any point in talking with her about it now that she’s gone home.
