Following two attempts by the G4 Development group to occupy Lentegeur Sports Field, a community space in Mitchell’s Plain, the City of Cape Town has obtained a court interdict against any further attempts at land grabs.
The G4 Development group, under the direction of Riaan Koeberg, allegedly made attempts to seize land at the Lentegeur Sports Field on Sunday, 22 October, and again the following weekend, according toKoeberg, undeterred by the potential consequences, stated, ‘We are not going to stop. We are going bigger. We have a big housing crisis in Mitchell’s Plain. We have 150 members now, but next week we will have 20 000.
In response to these invasion attempts, residents and members of various sports clubs affiliated with the Lentegeur Sports Field rallied together in protest. Ward 76 Councillor Avron Plaatjies highlighted the importance of the field to the community, emphasising its role in keeping young people engaged in positive activities away from the lure of gangs and drugs.To halt further land invasion attempts, the City of Cape Town has successfully obtained a court interdict.
Responding to the community’s protests and the City’s efforts to obtain an interdict, Councillor Plaatjie commented, ‘I’m extremely proud of the different sporting codes for coming out and strongly rejecting land invasion.’Looking for things to do in the city at half the price? He added, ‘Our cause has not been heard at all. We have tried everything to follow the protocol and engage with different government departments, but nothing has happened. We will keep on fighting till the end.’
