Judge Samantha P. Jessner says CARE Court may give vulnerable individuals the care they need and deserve.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, speaking at a mental health treatment center in San Jose, Calif., announces “Care Court,” a program that would let courts order treatment for some homeless people suffering from mental health disorders on Thursday, March 3, 2022. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, Newsom signed a law creating the program. He said it will take a few years to fully implement.

The website, www.lacourt.org/care, provides details of the program and information on how the system works. The CARE Court program was approved by the state Legislature last year. It allows eligible people — including relatives, first responders, health care providers and mental health experts — to petition a court to order care services and housing for individuals suffering from mental health issues.
